Doc Summary & General Reflection
CHASING CORAL SUMMARY REFLECTION
- The thing that challenged me most about this project was keeping up with all the information as I was watching. The film is pretty rich with factual information and statistics. I had to return about a hundred times to different scenes in the film while writing so that I could put trickles of that information into my summary.
- The good thing is that the movie is very easily watchable. It was specifically designed to introduce a new audience to the epidemic that is coral bleaching. It does just that by presenting a story with impactful characters that are easy to follow throughout their journey.
- It was very difficult at times to leave out addressing my opinions throughout the film. At least I found it challenging to not comment on certain absurdities or wild events that happen to the cast.
- I actually did a pretty good job of leaving out opinions so I didn't need to revise much in that regard at least.
- Yes it is impossible to interreact in your day to day as if you are a blank slate. Humans have evolved to respond in a reactionary way toward our past experiences. Therefore we have unconscious bias. It is the reason we have become so powerful and technologically advanced. If you keep burning yourself on fire then you will learn to stop touching fire. Similarly if people keep lying to you, you will stop trusting others. Unconscious bias is not a bad thing by itself because it is how we protect ourselves. With that said it is good to recognize those bias through a bit of introspection and determine whether or not they are logical.
- I included an in text citation in the beginning of my essay, however not the end so I will go back and do so! I did in fact present a works cited page, which is however very short as I only referenced the film and its website.
- If I somehow was trusted with the million of dollars to make this film the only thing I think I would change is how much pressure I put on the camera technicians to meet the timeline. I guess it's easy for me to say after watching the failures of the original filmmakers. They would have been a lot better off if they had let the camera technicians do their job properly and not rushed. It did actually create some drama to captivate the viewers so it might not be entirely a bad thing.
